Body Weight Supported Gait Therapy
(BWS-GT) and Functional E-Stim Rationale, Design & Implementation

Karen Good, MS, PT, OCS

Body Weight Supported Gait Therapy (BWS-GT) has been demonstrated as an effective means for improving ambulation for patients with a variety of neurological and orthopedic conditions. Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) shows promise in the enhancement of gait training in neurorehabilitation as well. This course will teach clinicians the rationale for therapeutic uses of FES in conjunction with BWS-GT in adult and pediatric populations Participants will review how the central nervous system controls and modulates walking, reacts to injury, and responds to therapeutic gait training using BWS. The course will also outline normal gait biomechanics and muscle recruitment; and appropriate timing and parameters of FES during the gait cycle. Through demonstration with patient volunteers, attendees will learn appropriate treatment planning, protocol development and set up of FES and BWS-GT. .
