Up & Walking:
Pediatric Gait & Clinical Interventions

Philip J.Koch, PT

PWB-GT has been demonstrated as an effective means for improving ambulation for patients with a variety of neurological conditions. Evidence has emerged showing similar results with pediatric patients, particularly with CP. Many clinicians have found that the use of a PWB device will hasten gains in ambulatory function of their patients in a safe and efficient environment. This course will present an overview of the progression of developmental skills in infants and children, including ambulation. A discussion of traditional therapeutic approaches to gait training will be presented, as well as an overview of pediatric gait assessment. The clinician will gain an understanding of how to facilitate the postural and balance components of a number of functional movement patterns or positions, with emphasis on gait. Patient treatment sessions will focus on PWB facilitation techniques & gait analysis. Pre/post gait treatment sessions. Current pediatric research studies will be discussed to demonstrate how this treatment approach can be readily incorporated into an evidence-based clinical practice. This course will assist clinicians in evaluation skills to identify appropriate patients for PWB intervention, designing a treatment program, and discussing expected outcomes. This approach can be used for children with minimal to severe gross motor dysfunction.
